Twist(s) and Turn(s) explores visual expressions of irony and play, failure and parody, the tragic and the absurd. The artists included in this show use these strategies to reinforce or challenge our prior understanding of everyday life.

Julia Callon’s photographs are based on painstakingly constructed miniature sets of fictional rooms and public spaces into which she has injected chaos and disaster.

In another example of battling forces beyond one’s control, Megan Dickie inserts herself into a fictional space resembling a video game from the 1980s and subjects herself to a constant stream of obstacles and failure. Over and over again, the artist stubbornly keeps trying to succeed.

Laura Kikauka, a self-acclaimed ‘collecto-holic’, visually bombards the viewer with layer upon layer of gathered objects rife with nostalgia, kitsch and popular culture references, creating a dizzying sense of overload in the viewer.

Adopting the aesthetics of inspirational posters, the Austrian artist duo, Lampalzer/Oppermann, blends comicality and irony to explore imaginary roles and identities they see fit for an artist.

At times humorous and playful, at others startling and disorienting, the always expressive works on view dare us to laugh a little, think a lot, and dive into the deep end of richly imaginative worlds.
